Babes/SBE Luncheon on Wednesday Apr 32nd or May 2nd, as you may prefer

Once again the lunar calendar, spring break, Passover, and Easter have caused NAB to conflict with our normal luncheon date, so the April meeting has been moved to the first week in May. Our speaker will be the Geek Chorus of NAB attendees. They'll have tales of going to the Sands Convention Center where a loud "Hello" produced a crisp echo. And also tell you of the shaggy hordes, their attitudes at half staff, who held cardboard signs saying, "Will code HTML for food."

As usual, our luncheon will be at Sinbad's just south of the Ferry Building on the Embarcadero near the foot of Mission St. We meet at 11:30 and are seated at 12:30.

Geocast is Gone

The Geocast website explains that they are winding down operations. They were formed in 1997 and capitalized with venture capital money. They intended to deliver internet content to PCs using excess digital television data capacity.

Dotcast and ArrayComm, companies with similar delivery plans, are still in business. Dotcast's second round of funding included money from GE Capital, Intel, and Disney.

iBlast, based in Beverly Hills, Ca. is apparently still a going concern. They've signed up 246 stations to participate in their system and say they began pilot tests in March.

New SBE Address

There is a new address for the National SBE office in Indianapolis. Effectively immediately use: 9247 Meridian St. Suite 305, Indianapolis, IN 46260. The phone number is 317-253-1640. Linda Emerick is the Certification Chair and her email is [email protected].

The Magic of Radio

I think we can all name a tune we heard on the radio that meant something special to us. The song "Don't Laugh At Me" written by Allen Shamblin and Steve Seskin and sung by Peter, Paul, and Mary, Mark Wills, and others has become a national movement. Against a background of classroom bullying, isolation, and school shootings, this song touched such a raw nerve with parents, kids, and teachers, that it has become a program for teaching self respect and respect for others. The neat thing is that it doesn't require a Phd. to explain it. Everyone "gets" the song. If you somehow missed it, just type in the title on your browser and pages and pages of sites will appear.

Steve Seskin lives in Richmond, Ca. and will appear at Freight and Salvage in Berkeley on May 11th. http://www.thefreight.org

Peter Yarrow, of P,P,&M, is devoting much of his time to telling teachers about the D.L.A.M. program.

The Dunbracco Gallery

I met Bill D. Dempster in 1958 and learned that the KPFA posters were his work. He'd signed them with his middle name which is Dunbracco. Tim Pozar and I are working on posting some of Bill's drawings and we'll let you know when to click in. Sorry, no small hotdogs or those little ears of corn. Also no pretense or stuffed shirts. You must leave stuffed shirts in your cookie folder before entering the gallery.
