Bill Ruck Injured in Athens

(By Paul Black)

I'm sorry to have to report that Bill Ruck has been badly injured during a job in Greece. Bill Newbrough from RF Specialties called Saturday and informed me that Bill Ruck has been hit by a car and is in the intensive care unit in a hospital in Athens. He has a broken hip, a broken leg, and (I believe) a broken arm, plus some other injuries. According to Bill Newbrough, he had just sent an e-mail recently to some friends explaining how terrible the traffic is over in Greece, and how dangerous it is for pedestrians. It's unfortunate that there was a prophetic aspect to that communication. All our prayers and good thoughts are going out to him and to his wife, and of course, all of us who have heard about this have offered to do anything we can hear to help.

At this point, there's no further word on when he will be well enough to return home, or if there is further surgery required, but as soon as any updated news is available, I will try and put out a special notice to everybody on this list about his condition.

Having just had a serious fall myself, I have a great understanding of how unpleasant these things can be. (Just as an aside, I am back up and walking again, on a cane, so I am actually almost fully recovered. I'm very grateful that I'm okay.)

More On Bill...

(By Tim Pozar)

Siobhan (Bill's wife) wrote in an earlier note...

KCSM Pulls the Plug

On Sunday May 16th KCSM put up a slide on their analog transmission announcing that they were shutting it down. That's all you'll see if you tune in channel 60. From now on you have to have a digital tuner and pick them up on ch 43 or get them on cable on ch 17. In Feb. they found that their lease on Mt. San Bruno would not be renewed. As ch 60 is an out of core channel it made no sense to construct a new facility at another site. Those 15% of the audience who watch using a receiver are now without the station as there is no cost effective way to get it. Do the numbers. A nice analog 27" TV goes for $300. The box to convert a digital signal to analog costs $350 to $400. Small TVs with digital tuners are nowhere to be seen. Anyone with a cheaper answer? Contact me.

Who is Mr. Wi-Fi?

One need hardly ask. I opened up my Investors Business Daily the morning of May 20th and there is an article on Wi-Fi. And who is that in the associated picture standing in front of a dish farm? It is our Web Meister Tim Pozar. Tim, do you know there are Hollywood press agents who would give their first born for the kind of ink you've gotten this past year? By the way, when you get that dish up on Yerba Buena Island, let me know. It just might work.

Internship At Pixar

M.T. Silvia at Pixar contacted me about a 10 week paid position she has open for this summer. The details are at: http://www.pixar.com/companyinfo/jobs/openings/mediasystemsengineer.html. Send your resume to [email protected]

Master Control Op Ch 42

Contact Frank Zepeda 925-288-3613 [email protected] If I'm reading the offering correctly the operation point is to move from Concord to San Francisco at some time in the future. The station is part of Pappas Telecasting. Refer to REF: EG003.

Transmedia Looking

Transmedia is a company that has been delivering radio commercials via IP and now has a system for doing TV commercials. From here on I'll just copy the note I got.

We are looking for someone to come on board immediately in a technical sales capacity to introduce our new TV/video distribution service to television station engineering departments. I would like very much to provide an opportunity for someone in the local SMPTE/SBE community who may be seeking employment here in the San Francisco area. If you personally know of anyone who meets the qualifications listed below, I'd certainly appreciate hearing from you (or them). To be quite candid, the position will differ somewhat from a typical "Sales Engineer" role in that it will entail a good deal of telephone/electronic contact with station engineering departments vs. personal meetings, hence the limited travel.

A BROADCAST TELEVISION SALES ENGINEER is needed in ANY USA LOCATION. Leading, 28-year-old broadcast services company has an opening for an experienced television station engineer or TV broadcast equipment sales engineer. Knowledge of broadcast facility operations and on-air equipment, including play-to-air servers, automation systems and interconnectivity is mandatory. Excellent communications/sales skills required to introduce the next generation of Web-based television/video distribution systems to TV Engineering departments nationwide. Ideal candidate will be located in the San Francisco Bay Area, but qualified applicants from other areas will be considered. No relocation or travel required.
