BABES/SBE LUNCHEON ON WEDNESDAY Oct 25th

Scott Nix of Vela Inc., Marketing Communications Manager for Broadcast/Systems Products, will be speaking about MPEG standards and interoperability of video file servers.

As usual, our luncheon will be at Sinbad's just south of the Ferry Building on the Embarcadero near the foot of Mission St. We meet at 11:30 and are seated at 12:30.

ENNES Workshop Valuable
The Ennes workshop held in Berkeley on Oct 14th was well attended with engineers from all over the west. Six engineers were there from Korea. The speakers were well organized and gave the attendees copies of the materials used in the talks. I found the talk on building grounding to be particularly valuable as was the talk on IOTs given by Marconi. Our thanks to John Poray and Richard Farquhar for putting the program together.

SBE found out about the high price of hotels and meeting rooms in the Bay Area. But Berkeley is free compared to San Jose. Priced a motel room lately?

Halloween Special
On the website you'll find one of my creations from a few years ago. When there were a lot of stories in the press on Prozac, I happened to be reading a collection of Edgar Allan Poe Stories. Poe was know for his bouts of depression.

I got to musing about Poe living in an urban stucco apartment building (The kind with Bermuda lights.) while working on his classic poem, The Raven. He hits bottom while dealing with contemporary horrors and is rescued by this marvelous pill. Suggested for mature audiences only.

Concerning Vela
For nearly 10 years, Vela has defined the advancement of MPEG compression products for broadcast and related industries. Now with over 40,000 channels of professional MPEG decoding installed worldwide, the company is a proven MPEG leader. From single encode or decode channels up to multichannel video servers and complete end-user systems, Vela's broad product range addresses the wide range of requirements of the television industry. The company's philosophy of continual innovation has resulted in delivery of new products ahead of the industry-like the first truly standards-based MPEG-2 encoders and decoders, the first commercially available 4:2:2 MPEG encoder (Argus), and the first truly open-architecture video server (RapidAccess).

Recently, Vela received the prestigious Emmy award from The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. The award highlights Vela's pioneering development of full motion broadcast quality PC video and compression plug-in cards utilized in the manufacture of non-linear editing systems or video servers.

Vela's newest "first" - the Argus Dual-Stream encoder - lets users encode both MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 video streams simultaneously and frame accurately, greatly reducing production time for applications requiring both formats. Leading broadcasters and OEMs around the world uses Vela encoders and decoders, and Vela's board-level products are employed in some of the most advanced video products available. Vela also employs its core technologies in state-of-the-art end-user products - like the RapidAccess video server and IDS intelligent signal processing equipment.

From board level and sub-system MPEG solutions to complete end-user system, Vela is leading in technology development, supporting the television industry's transition to digital and high definition.

Editors Note: Why is it that when I watch an MPEG program that I have this overwhelming desire to play checkers?
