What's Good About TV?
Having slammed the tired TV news format last month, I thought I'd say something nice. In my view, the only really good thing about TV is its ability to show you something as it actually happens. The opposite is to show you replays that beat a story to death with a stick. One of my favorite Saturday Night Live sketches was the "death of Buckwheat". Joe Piscapo did a dead-on Ted Kople impression as the same footage was shown about 6 or 7 times. Satirizing the repeats and anchors verbally tap dancing to fill time, showed television at its worst. Whenever the network got into that mode I'd feel like hiding under my desk out of shame.

In 1989 when we were covering the Loma Prieta earthquake, we had power for the tech areas and the newsroom. The HVAC was down for the duration. Everyone worked long hours and it was a struggle. When we finally got back to regular programming, it was a real letdown. For some 3 or 4 days we had been doing what we were meant to do and now we were back to the game show buzzers and gongs, the interview shows featuring the perverse habits of the trailer park set, and the soap operas with their glacial plots. It was fodder for mental ward rec rooms and airport passenger lounges. (Programming for dumbographics rather than demographics.) In master control it was only noticed if it stopped.
