BABES/SBE LUNCHEON ON WEDNESDAY Oct 28TH
This month our program will feature the Larry Bloomfeld from Sunup Systems. His firm has tackled the problem of multiple traffic systems under one roof with a single point of control.

As usual our luncheon will be at Sinbad's. Sinbad's is just south of the Ferry Building on the Embarcadero near the foot of Mission Street. Please RSVP to Karen Prasek at Zack's: 408-324-0551 x126 as we've been running out of tables and chairs. We meet at 11:30 and are seated at 12:30.

Future Meetings
DTV At Sutro
The installation goes on. Most of the transmitters are in place and await 480 VAC for testing. The antenna is here and the channel filters are expected. The various legal delays held us up but we are moving right along. You want me to predict an on-air date? No way.

There are three Harris transmitters and one Larcan. There are four different ATSC encoders. Mitsubishi, NDS, GI, and Lucent. We have the GI and actually have a decoder. Several writers have done the math on what happens when you try and bump standard definition 4:3 up to 1080I 16:9. They're right on the money. It inhales most profoundly. (i.e. sucks big time). You develop a fine appreciation for VHS tape after seeing it.

Our D5 machine hasn't arrived so I can't tell you what HD looks like through the system.

On the RF side, I've looked at the output of our transmitter up at the factory. I appreciate why a low pass filter is needed. IOTs are amazingly broad and output a family of harmonics that go well beyond 2nd and 3rd. The harmonics are there regardless of whether the modulation is being corrected. Correction applies to the shoulders of the mask. It has been the subject of more sales blather than any topic in recent memory. The bottom line is that the more correction you apply, the more the noise floor will rise in the N+1 and N-1 channels. I heard about that two years ago and now I've seen it.

One benchmark to keep in mind is that you should be able to achieve full output power while using the driver at 50% of capacity. If the driver is pushed to the max, you will need an electronic non-such to pre-distort it.

MORE CERT TESTS PER YEAR
Exam Dates Application Deadline

We now have 4 local certification tests per year instead of 2. Applications must be filed with the SBE office in Indianapolis prior to the indicated deadline dates. I have some certification packets on hand or you can fax a request for one to 317-253-0418. The National Certification Director is Linda Godby-Emerick ([email protected]).

FRANK FOGE OK
Frank was at a recent Frequency Coordinating Committee meeting at KRON and seems to be doing fine. Frank had received a sharp blow to the head up at Monument Peak.

A Sherwood Story
Back when KSFO was the "World's Greatest Radio Station", morning man Don Sherwood liked to break up the newsman on duty and he was usually successful. I asked one of them what was the worst thing Don ever did. "The news had just started and I knew Don had come into the booth and was standing next to me. As I was reading I could hear his zipper going slowly up and down. This went on for what seemed like a long time. Then I felt something in my ear. Thank God it was just his thumb."
